Bishop Silvano of Luni

His Eminence, Bishop Silvano of Luni was born in Pistoia, Italy, in 1947, into a family with a long history of service to the Roman Catholic Church. Himself a former Roman Catholic clergyman, he converted to Orthodoxy in 1985.

Bishop Silvano holds a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Florence, a diploma in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome, an advanced certificate in psychology and human behavioral sciences, and studied Orthodox theology at the St. Sergius Institute in Paris. He has published a number of books on Orthodox theology and spirituality in Italian and lectures widely at various academic institutions in his native Italy.

In 1999, concerned about the increasing ecumenical activities in so-called "world Orthodoxy," His Eminence separated himself from his former "official" jurisdiction and aligned himself with the Holy Synod in Resistance. He was subsequently elected to the Episcopacy by the Holy Synod and named Synodal Exarch in Italy.

Bishop Silvano is the founder of the Monastery of St. Seraphim of Sarov, in Pistoia. He has engaged in extensive missionary, charitable, educational, and publishing activities, as well as endeavors directed at the spiritual formation of the Faithful.

• Name Day: 11 September (St. Silouan the Athonite).
