Bishop George of Alania

His Eminence, Bishop George of Alania was born in Russia in 1973, being of Ossetian descent on his father's side.

His Eminence holds a degree in biochemistry from the University of Tskhinvali, South Ossetia. He was Ordained Deacon and Presbyter in Russia, in 1992, by a Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. He was the first clergyman to resurrect Orthodoxy in South Ossetia (in the Transcaucasus), after the fall of Communism and following this region's declaration of independence. From 1996 through 2003, Bishop George taught Orthodox religious education at the high school level.

Owing to ecclesiastical problems in the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad, which had an immediate impact on those belonging to this Church within Russia and its former satellites, in January of 2003, the then Father George, together with the clergy and the faithful of this region, aligned himself with the Holy Synod in Resistance. His Grace was Consecrated to the Episcopacy on 7 November 2005 (Old Style), as the first Bishop of the newly-founded Diocese of Alania, in continuation of this historic and illustrious Orthodox jurisdiction in the region of the Transcaucasus.

For his self-sacrifice and self-denial in serving the people of God, Bishop George has been decorated by the newly-established Republic of South Ossetia, as well as by the state of Russia.

• Name Day: 23 April (Holy Great Martyr George).
